Denzel Washington once gave a speech in which he urged young people to “fail big”, and chase their dreams to the furthest extent.
Vergil Ortiz Jr. seemingly is frustrated that he hasn’t been afforded a big fight despite being a #1 contender, and holding a form of a world title in the WBA division, Ortiz Jr wants the big names now.
Per the great veteran boxing reporter, Jake Donovan of BoxingScene.com, a petition has been filed by Ortiz to the WBA to have his mandatory challenger title status enforced against a form of a WBA welterweight champion in Eimantas Stanionis, next.
Stanionis has stepped aside from forcing a mandatory fight with Errol Spence Jr., allowing the mega-fight of Crawford vs. Spence to happen next on November 19th, and Ortiz Jr is clear he wants to be in the conversation with the great fighters of this era.
“One thing we have done since I’m the WBA mandatory or whatever… we reached out to the WBA and pushed the mandatory thing to fight Stanionis,” Ortiz stated on The DAZN Boxing Show. “Hopefully we get it by the end of this year.”
Ortiz, who has only fought once this year due to a health issue is looking for a quick return to get two fights in this calendar year and wants a meaningful bout against Stanionis as his next which would put him in line for the big fights in this division.
