The most underrated two-division world champion in boxing Rey Vargas will vie for his third world title as he faces another underrated fighter in O’Shaquie Foster as their press conference ahead of their WBC Super Featherweight World Championship this Saturday, February 11 live on SHOWTIME, set the tone for an exciting weekend of action.
As the two shared exchanges at the Westin in San Antonio, Texas.
“The Alamodome has seen me crowned champion before and they’re going to see it again on Saturday night,” said Rey Vargas who won the WBC featherweight title over Mark Magsayo last summer, and looks to repeat the feat in a new weight class. “It’s a big goal of mine to become part of the club of three-division champions. I want to be one of the best that there’s ever been in Mexican boxing.”
The normal banter got a bit personal as Vargas began to make observations about Foster.
“O’Shaquie is a quality fighter with a strong Olympic style. But I’ve fought opponents with all different styles. What I’ve noticed from watching O’Shaquie is that he’s kind of veered from his path and started to do some things differently ahead of this fight. It makes me think he’s feeling the pressure of this fight,” said Vargas. “He knows that I’m not just anybody and I know he’s lost sleep from the anxiety of getting ready to face me. I know that he likes to fight from either stance, but I’ve got a plan to counter anything he brings."
Not to be outdone Foster had some words for Vargas as well.
“My confidence never left after I lost a fight. All I needed to do was focus and dedicate myself to my craft. I always felt like I was one of the most talented fighters, I just needed to put in the work. And that’s what we did,” said the Texas native O’Shaquie Foster. “I just woke up, so I’m not losing any sleep thinking about him. He can talk that talk, but he better know that I’m not Mark Magsayo or any of those guys he’s fought. The strength and the speed is different.”
This prompted one of the best exchanges as Vargas
“Foster better wake up, because he isn’t going to be able to sleep through this fight. We’re coming for him and we’re coming to leave with the title,” said Vargas.“The best way to tell the world about me is by winning another world title. I’ve been a solid world champion for a while and now I’m going to add myself to the same list as the greatest Mexican fighters of all time.”
Foster was very precise with his words not unlike the way Juan Manuel Marquez was with his punches as he sent out the final salvo of the press conference.
“He sounds a little nervous over there. He’s talking about what stance I’m gonna use. I’m not worried about what he’s bringing. I know what I come to the table with. I’m gonna be sharp and show him what I’m really about,” said Foster. “I’d love to unify titles after a win on Saturday, but first we have to send Rey back down to 126 pounds."
