Sunny Edwards To Face Felix Alvarado, Not Martinez Next

Many consider IBF flyweight world champion Sunny Edwards to be the best in the division, with the other feeling it was the WBC flyweight world champion Julio Cesar Martinez, who recently lost to Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, at super flyweight.

To clear up any confusion, Edwards has been waiting for six weeks to receive a fight contract from Martinez’s team. Instead, Edwards was met with a different contract, a title defense of the IBF flyweight belt against Felix Alvarado.

As reported first by Jake Donovan of, Edwards was prepared to go to Mexico if need be just to make the fight, with a targeted fight date of October 22nd. They never received an offer, and at the eleventh hour will face Alvarado instead. As stated by Donovan, September 7th was the last day for the bout to be contracted, and that day came and went without anything meaningful occurring to make the fight happen.

Martinez will still fight on October 22nd in Mexico, just not against Sunny Edwards.

Alvarado, a decorated 108 lbs world champion, who struggled to get the fights he wanted at that division, saw him move up to flyweight, which now has him in the biggest fight of his career.

Edwards hasn’t fought since March 19th when he got a wide unanimous decision win over Muhammad Waseem.
