One of the best fighters in the world, Shakur Stevenson, who in his mid-20’s has already been a two-division world champion winning belts at featherweight and super featherweight has his eyes set on a third division with world titles. The problem now - what happens with all the belts after Devin Haney vs. George Kambosos Jr. II next week.
“At the end of the day, Lomachenko wants them belts,” Stevenson stated on The DAZN Boxing Show. “His mind ain’t really focused on me. So you can’t blame me if he don’t end up taking the fight with me right now and go the Devin Haney route.”
Stevenson’s point is valid. Lomachenko has a long history of chasing world titles, and going after legacy based goals. Devin Haney fulfills the criteria more so than Stevenson, as Haney if he beats Kambosos Jr., would have all four world titles.
“At the end of the day, Lomachenko wants them belts,” Stevenson continued. “His mind ain’t really focused on me. So you can’t blame me if he don’t end up taking the fight with me right now and go the Devin Haney route.”
For Stevenson, who is eager to get in with Lomachenko, he acknowledges that right now is more of a waiting game than anything else.
"That probably be smarter for him,” said Stevenson. “I just gotta sit back and be ready when the time comes.”
For those unaware, Lomachenko was set to face Kambosos Jr., this year, but the Russian invasion of the Ukraine derailed all of those plans allowing Haney to step in and face Kambosos Jr., whom he outpointed. Lomacheno now returns to the ring October 29th against undefeated Jamaine Ortiz on October 29th at the Hulu Theater, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York, mere weeks after Haney vs. Kambosos Jnr.
