Stanionis vs Vergil Ortiz Pushed Back

The biggest fight of 2023 is postponed.

WBA ‘Regular’ welterweight champion Eimantas Stanionis was forced to withdraw from his upcoming bout with Vergil Ortiz Jr., on Friday as he went through with unplanned surgery to remove his appendix.

It is yet another gut punch for boxing fans in 2023 as we’re seeing more fights not being made than being made.

“Never used to raise the concerns about being ill or being unhealthy, but yesterday the pain was too hard to handle and went straight to the hospital for a late evening emergency appendectomy surgery,” Stanionis explained through his various social media platform on Saturday. “My manager (Shelly Finkel) filed the request to postpone the fight.”

The new date should be in April, as he Stanionis furthered he will be flying to the United States soon, once he is healthy to start his training camp.

Stanionis won his world title on April 16th against Radzhab Butaev.

We wish Stanionis a speedy recovery and can’t wait to see him challenge one of the elite young guns in the sport, Vergil Ortiz Jr.
