Shakur Stevenson Expresses Surprise Over Devin Haney Staying at 135lbs, Picks Him to Beat Lomachenko

Two-weight world champion, Shakur Stevenson (19-0, 9KOs), remains surprised that undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney (29-0, 15KOs) will face off against Vasyl Lomachenko (17-2, 11KOs), mainly due to concerns regarding the weight of Haney. Stevenson commented that Haney could have looked better at the weigh-in for his last outing against Geroge Kambosos back in October and is surprised that he has stayed at 135lb and not gone up to 140 lbs already. Haney & Lomachenko will fight against each other on the 20th of May at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Stevenson, if he is successful against Shuichiro Yoshino (16-0, 12KOs), is likely to get the winner of Haney-Lomachenko, with Stevenson’s contest an official final-eliminator courtesy of the WBC. Stevenson has commented that if Haney does move up to 140lbs, he will not consider it as a duck on behalf of Haney when speaking to boxingscene.com

Shakur Stevenson Open to Facing Longtime Rival Devin Haney in Future Fight

“I have been around Devin for years,” Stevenson said. “Throughout the years, me and him were always one weight class apart. Like, he’ll be the weight class above me, so it seems really normal right now that when I’m going up to 135, it’s natural that his body changed, and he’s having a hard time making 135 and 140 is definitely the next option for him. So, I’m not gonna say he’s ducking or none of that kinda stuff. I’m a person who’s been around Devin, so I know exactly what’s going on.

“You can look at his last weigh-in – he looked drained and sucked up and hungry. So, it’s like, I know he’s probably not gonna stay at 135, and I’m surprised he’s even fighting this fight at 135 after the way he looked his last fight. He looked good in the fight, but he looked drained and sucked up at the weigh-in.”

Haney has already commented that his fight with Lomachenko will likely be his last fight at lightweight.

Stevenson is backing Haney to be successful against Lomachenko, claiming that Haney’s and Lomachenko’s size disparity will be an issue with Haney, the naturally bigger man of the pair.

“Devin’s gonna win, Lomachenko. I just saw him in the gym (Top Rank Gym, Las Vegas, NV). He’s too small, and I think that’s the real problem. Lomachenko’s a really good fighter, and I don’t take anything away from him. I just think he’s really small. I’m just moving up to 135, and I’m bigger than him.”
