Despite losing his WBC and WBO Super Featherweight titles on the scales, missing the 130 limit by 1.6 pounds, Shakur Stevenson (19-0) was able to put that all to one side cruising past Brazilian Robson Conceicao (17-2).
The gulf in class was apparent in a fight Stevenson was dominating from start to finish. The Newark man scored a knockdown in the 4th round landing a left to the body, drawing a delayed reaction from Conceicao as he clung too Stevenson sinking to his knees.
Two of the judges both scored 117-109 and a scorecard of 118-108 gave Stevenson the unanimous decision win.
Stevenson leaves the 130 pound division in unharmonious circumstances, not even considering the 2nd chance to make the super featherweight limit. A show of disregard for his two belts.
But a chance to compete in the promised land awaits. The lightweight division provides Stevenson the chance to hang with some seriously elite fighters.
“I got to fight the champ. Set it up, me and Devin (Haney) can lock it in. After he fights (George) Kambosos, let us get it on!”
Said Shakur Stevenson in his post-fight interview for ESPN, giving a clear indication on who he wants next at 135 pounds.
“I’ll fight Lomachenko too.” Stevenson also confidently stated.
However, the fact that the winner of Devin Haney vs George Kambosos 2 is down to face Vasyl Lomachenko, Stevenson is more likely to face the loser in that fight rather than the winner.
Gervonta Davis has long been spoken of, sadly legal issues for Davis also look to hold that potential mega-fight up too. Regardless it’s a strong a division and you would expect a chance at becoming a three-weight World Champion happens in Stevenson’s next two fights.
