WBC interim super welterweight world champion Sebastian Fundora will look to make the first defense of his interim world title against Carlos Ocampo on a Showtime Championship Boxing card on October 8 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Yet, it is sharing the stage with his sister, Gabriela Fundora that makes the night so memorable.
“This was planned but it’s exciting that it’s finally happening,” Sebastian Fundora told in an exclusive interview with BoxingScene.com. “I get to defend my interim title. [My sister is] fighting and defending her WBC Latin America title. We’re going to feel like champions. We’re both going to defend our titles and feel like champions.”
The two siblings are known for their freakish genetics as Sebastian makes 154 lbs., despite being 6’5 ½” tall, and his sister Gabriella, is 5’ 9”, and makes 112 lbs. The size advantage they have over most is staggering and befuddling to the average civilian who could not fathom making these weights in life, let alone at that size.
“I’m glad I get to share the ring with my sister that day. This feels like my first main event,” said Fundora. “The last one, I was the B-Side. This time, it’s all about me. I’m excited to share it with my sister on the card.”
The two siblings will look to have a historic event, as Gabriela will headline the YouTube prelims of the fight card, whereas Sebastian will headline the main event. For Sebastian, a win on this night should set the stage for a mandatory unification bout between himself and Jermell Charlo, who currently holds all four world titles at the 154 lbs division, and is set to fight Tim Tszyu in January.
