Ryan Garcia Splits From Trainer Joe Goossen

Reports from Mike Coppinger indicate that Ryan Garcia has split from his trainer Joe Goossen following his defeat to Gervonta Davis (29-0 27KOs) in Las Vegas on the 22nd of April.

Garcia (23-1, 19KOs) joined Goosen in 2020 following his split from Eddy Reynoso after being involved with the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez camp before joining Goossen.

Ryan had indicated when he joined Goossen that he wanted to become his own man under the tutelage of Goossen and step out of the shadow of former mentor Canelo.

Goossen and Garcia had worked together for three fights before fighting Davis last month. The partnership started with Garcia’s stoppage victory over world title challenger and London 2012 gold medalist Luke Campbell in 2021. Following victory over Campbell, Garcia and Goossen would have two fights together in 2022 against Emmanuel Tagoe & Javier Fortuna.

The relationship had soured between the pair following Garcia’s defeat to Davis, which saw Garcia defeated in the seventh round following a body shot. Garcia would also suffer a knockdown in the second round after a confident opening round for Garcia. Many ringside observers had criticized Goossen’s instructions, corner work, and absence from Garcia’s post-fight press conference. Promoter, Oscar De La Hoya was also absent from the post-fight press conference, with the Golden Boy supremo indicating that this was due to fears for his safety.

Following the defeat to Davis, Garcia indicated he would move to the super-lightweight division. No confirmation has been given at the time of publication as to who will replace Goossen as Garcia’s trainer. Still, Garcia’s father, Henry, is set to retain his position within the set-up of Ryan.
