IBF world flyweight champion Sunny Edwards (20-0, 4KOs) is seemingly confident as he prepares to face two-weight world champion and current WBO world flyweight champion Jesse Rodriguez (18-0, 14KOs). Edwards is already lining up who he wants to fight next.
The undefeated pairing will head to the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, on December 16th to contest one of the more exciting fights made in the flyweight division recently, gaining positive traction in anticipation from a UK perspective.
Edwards joined the Matchroom promotional stable, following stints under the now-defunct promotional entity Probelum after beginning life as a professional under the guidance of Frank Warren.
Edwards has always been confident about the prospect of facing Rodriguez, believing that his style will be able to negate Rodriguez’s best efforts after a prolonged period of calling out Rodriguez during 2023.
Edwards is now seemingly plotting his next moves and has targeted an encounter with former pound-for-pound rated fighter and multi-weight world champion Roman Gonzalez.
“After I beat Bam (Rodriguez), I’ll bring Chocolatito to the UK for the lads,” Edwards claimed after having previously sought a commitment from Gonzalez, who is now receptive to the idea.
The comments that surfaced on Edwards’ social media stemmed from Gonzalez backing his Teiken promotional stablemate Rodriguez.
Rodriguez is co-promoted by Matchroom Boxing alongside Teikken, with Matchroom being involved with Rodriguez in his previous five fights.
Gonzalez has not returned to the ring since December 3rd last year, losing a majority decision against rival Juan Francisco Estrada in the same venue in Arizona. Promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom has previously talked up the prospect of the winner of the contest between Edwards and Rodriguez. However, Gonzalez has previously dismissed any prospect of facing his promotional stablemate or Edwards.
Responding to the comments made by Edwards, Gonzalez replied that he would face Edwards if he could negate past Rodriguez in December.
“Bam Rodriguez will win but I would love to visit the beautiful UK. God bless. #TeamTeiken,” Gonzalez replied.
“So when he doesn’t, we have a deal,” Edwards asked in response.
“Deal. God Bless,” insisted Gonzalez.
