Regis Prograis vs. Danielito Zorrilla: Preview, Prediction & Betting Odds

DAZN Boxing makes its way to “The Big Easy” in New Orleans, LA, this Saturday live from the Smoothie King Center. WBC junior welterweight champion Regis Prograis (28-1, 24 KOs) will take on Danielito Zorrilla (17-1, 13 KOs) live on DAZN.

REGIS PROGRAIS MAKES HIS MATCHROOM DEBUT IN FRONT OF HIS HOME CROWD

It’s been an interesting ride for Prograis as he was once signed to Probellum and couldn’t get the fights he wanted due to boxing politics. Once he became a free agent, he had the choice of going to either Top Rank or Matchroom Boxing. The junior middleweight situation at Top Rank isn’t clear, and the fighters they have are either coming up on their last fight on their contract or are promotional free agents. Conversely, Matchroom has plenty of options for Prograis at junior middleweight, with the potential of a fight with Subriel Matias once he fulfills his obligations with Premier Boxing. In the end, Prograis signed with Eddie Hearn and also made it a co-promotional deal with Prograis’ imprint.

In the ring, Prograis is a straight bully with a ton of movement happening, making defending against him difficult. Against Jose Zepeda in November, Prograis just kept coming and eventually stopped him in the 11thround of their fight. Prograis will have to do some of the same against Zorrilla to keep him off throughout the fight.

DANIELITO ZORRILLA GETS HIS LONG-AWAITED TITLE SHOT

Zorrilla is a fighter under the Cotto Promotions banner and, at one point, was a red-hot prospect. I don’t know if it was his inactivity or lack of dedication, but he never seemed to regain his momentum. In March 2021, he had that fight on Ring City, where he was hit behind the head and won a technical decision. Fans were saying he was malingering, but when I spoke to his reps the next day, he was still in the hospital. After scoring a knockout over Pablo Cesar Cano, he faced junior welterweight contender Arnold Barboza Jr. Although Zorrilla lost by decision, he gave Barboza Jr. a helluva fight, and people appreciated his valiant effort.

Zorrilla then scored a first-round knockout against Aristides Quintero in March, which set him up for this fight with Prograis as a late replacement. Zorrila has been waiting for a long time to get this opportunity, and on Saturday, we will see the best version of Zorrilla we have ever seen. Still, Prograis the champ for a reason and will be too much for Zorrilla to handle on Saturday night. If Zorrilla can stay disciplined and work off the jab making the fight tactical, he may have a shot at capturing the WBC title when it’s all said and done.

REGIS PROGRAIS VS. DANIELITO ZORRILLA PREDICTION

Although Prograis is favored widely on the betting odds, Zorrilla is a tough customer and will be game all night in this fight. I don’t see Prograis getting the stoppage in this one, but he will come away with the decision victory. Prograis by unanimous decision.
