Prograis vs. Zepeda Heads To Carson, CA For World Title Fight

If you have family in Los Angeles, California, you might be one happy camper, as it looks like Thanksgiving weekend, #1 ranked Jose “Chon” Zepeda will face former world champion Regis “Rougarou” Prograis for the vacant WBC super lightweight world title, with a rumored venue coming to light being the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Cal, as MarvNation in association with Legendz Entertainment looks to put together this even which will broadcast on pay-per-view, with no price point or distributor set as of yet.

“I’ve been waiting for this fight for three years,” said former world champion Regis Prograis. “I was a champion three years ago, and I stayed at 140 so that I can fulfill my goal and be a two-time champion at 140. I’ve been waiting long for this opportunity, and I believe November 26 is when I will unleash my three years of frustration. I could have gone to 147 and got more money, but I always wanted to be a two-time champion. I changed some things around, I got a nutritionist for my last fight. I am very grateful for this opportunity to come again, and I will not let it slip.”

Though Regis was not the original opponent, as it was set for Jose Zepeda vs. Jose Ramirez, Ramirez was getting married in October, hence Regis Prograis getting the opportunity.

“I’m really excited about this fight finally happening. This is not like other fights,” said Zepeda, who had lost his first two world title fights of his career. “This is the top two in the 140lb. division fights like this you don’t see in boxing anymore. This is a real fight and the best part is that the fans are aware of this.”

Zepeda is on a heater as of late, getting “Fight of the Year” honors in 2020 when he knocked out Ivan Baranchyk in the fifth round in an ESPN broadcast, and winning Knockout of the Year last year when he stopped Josue Vargas. With a rather boring, and lackluster fight against Hank Lundy thrown in there as well.

“The super lightweight championship of the world, a division of greatness, could not find a better match than Zepeda vs Prograis,” said Mauricio Sulaiman, President of the WBC. “Legends like Julio Cesar Chavez, Oscar De La Hoya, Kostya Tszyu and Floyd Mayweather just to name a few, have proudly held the WBC green and gold belt in this division. Both fighters are in their prime and ready to give the boxing world a memorable thriller as both have participated in fights of the year throughout their careers respectively.”
