Most narratives being written have sung the praises of fearsome super lightweight, Subriel Matías, who headlines Showtime Championship Boxing, Saturday, as both fighters fight for their first world title, which is the vacant IBF super lightweight.
The unbeaten Argentinean fighter has vowed to make the world take notice of him, as he plans to fight fire with fire and make the world remember his name. The same name that somehow got forgotten after beating top contender Lewis Ritson.
“I do agree that the fight isn’t gonna reach the final bell,” Ponce said when speaking with veteran boxing reporter Keith Idec of BoxingScene.com through a translator. “It’s gonna end by a knockout, but you know what I think the most? I’m gonna be the winner by knockout.”
This might feel like a fool’s gold to an astute observer as Matias is one of the most violent boxers of the modern era. The amount of damage Matias has forced his opponents to endure has caused multiple coaches to stop the bout early.
“Subriel is a great fighter,” Ponce remarked undetered, “..someone that always comes out swinging, ready to fight, has a lot of heart. I really admire that from him.”
The bout that headlines Showtime, at the Armory in Minnesota, will be the rare purist treat, that is becoming more of a trend. Two fighters, who fought their way to a world title from the b-side, Matias has faced three prospects and avenged his lone career loss, while Ponce fought Ritson on foreign soil to get his world ranking. This is a fight between two fighters, rather than two politicians of the sport.
“It’s gonna be a high-voltage affair,” Ponce said as though was coming up with a tagline in the marketing department to sell the fight.. “The fans are going to love it. I expect both of us to come out there, you know, with our heads up high, trying to be aggressive, and everyone’s gonna love what they see.”
