He also last fought in December getting a technical knockout over Wilner Soto in Orlando, Florida. He notably also lost a split decision in a four-round fight to former WBA world champion Mauricio Lara.

Cardenas is unbeaten in the past six-and-a-half years and riding an 11-fight winning streak. His last victory was the biggest win of his career, when he knocked out Rafael Pedroza in the second round. The bout was shown on ShoBox: The Next Generation. He entered that fight as +225 underdog.
