Paulie Malignaggi Sees Similarities Between Canelo v. Golovkin, and Pacquiao v. Marquez

“If Golovkin wins this fight you basically have a Pacquiao Marquez type of rivalry, said boxing legend and co-founder of ProBox TV, Paulie Malignaggi. “…the first fight was a draw, just like this fight, controversial or not it was a draw, and then we ended up having three fights afterward. Golovkin could easily cause a fourth fight just by winning this one, and you have something similar there.”

The fight we have all been waiting for is finally here. The long-awaited, four years in the making bout between Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin will finally take place on DAZN, but DAZN PPV, instead of simply the streaming service, as originally intended.

“The only problem is Golovkin is 40, and that is probably the whole reason why Golovkin had to wait for the third fight to begin with,” said Malignaggi.  “…from that perspective, I think there is more of a chance that this fight, this rivalry gets closed out in emphatic fashion with a Canelo knockout than there is of Golovkin forcing a fourth fight.”

Though Malignaggi has long stated that Golovkin is one of the best of his era and on his now-defunct podcast. That said it is hard to look past Golovkin’s age.

“40-years-old is 40-years-old,” said Malignaggi. “We can talk about how this is the important fight of the rivalry and this is the one that counts, and all this other stuff. But we don’t live in a comic book, we live in real-life people age. Aging is a real thing.”

It is clear that the future hall-of-famer, Malignaggi has major concerns about Golovkin’s age heading into this fight. Will it matter come fight night?
