It’s Vergil Ortiz Jr. (19-0, 19 KOs) vs. Fredrick Lawson (30-3, 22 KOs) fight week, and all eyes will be on Ortiz. Golden Boy Promotions is hoping that he makes it through Friday’s weigh-in, as twice last year, Ortiz did not, forcing the Promotion company to make some hard decisions at the last minute.
Ortiz Jr. was on his way to a welterweight title fight last year before running into medical issues, forcing him to move up to junior middleweight. It’s plagued Ortiz throughout his career, as every time he was ready for a title shot, his body would say otherwise, and he would move up in weight. Even junior middleweight might be too low for Ortiz, whose body continues to grow. His trainer, Robert Garcia, told ProBoxTV that an eventual move to middleweight was potentially in Ortiz’s future.
On Saturday night, Ortiz will remind fight fans of what he can do when healthy. He is a solid contender who will be able to compete against the top five competitors in the junior middleweight division. It will start with Ortiz’s vicious body attack and end with a straight right hand to Lawson’s head. The best chance Lawson has is to try to catch Ortiz Jr. with something during an exchange, but it’s hard to see Ortiz being affected by anything Lawson has to offer.
Some nice BLING ✨
