On this day...Kostya Tszyu stops Johnson

Few captured an era of boxing the way the Australian puncher, Kostya Tszyu did. With an iconic look and legendary one-punch power, Tszyu very quickly became must-see television.

Winning the IBF junior welterweight world title in only his fourteenth fight as a professional, Tszyu earned a sixth-round technical knockout of Jake Rodriguez. Tszyu’s first world title defense was against Roger Mayweather and after another title defense against Hugo Pineda.

In his third defense of his world title, Tsyzu stopped Corey Johnson via a fourth-round knockout, that took place at the Entertainment Centre, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Tszyu’s Career After

Tszyu had two eras, his run into being stopped by Vince Phillips and then his thirteen win-streak that included WBC and IBF junior welterweight titles, with wins over an aging Julio Cesar Chavez, two wins over Sharmba Mitchell, Zab Judah, Ben Tackie, and Jesse James Leija.

In Tszyu’s prime, he was one of the best punchers of his generation, best seen when he dropped Zab Judah. The fight was so memorable comedian Cedric The Entertainer, made it into part of his comedy routine.

Tszyu was stopped by Ricky Hatton, which was a major pillar of the foundation that made Hatton the huge star that he was.

Johnson’s Career After

Johnson, a Detroit native, never had a fight that compared to this one ever again. In 1999, he fought Hasan Al to a technical draw, when the bout was called off due to an accidental clash of heads in the second round.

Johnson never could secure a big win in his career but was able to record a respectable professional career with these being the big moments of his career though the ending of the bout was very unflattering.
