On this day Caleb Plant, the former IBF super middleweight world champion, was born on July 8th, 1992, in Ashland City, Tennessee.
Plant won his world title against IBF super middleweight champion José Uzcátegui on January 13, 2019. The bout was a one-sided victory - that saw Plant score a knockdown and controlling the whole fight. Plant would the IBF world title via a unanimous decision. Plant would hold the belt from 2019 until 2022, in which he would take on the face of boxing, Canelo Alvarez on pay-per-view.
Plant faced Canelo Álvarez, who held and still holds the WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles, in a title unification bout on November 6, 2021, to crown an undisputed world champion. Plant lost the fight via eleventh-round technical knockout, which marked his first professional career loss, as well as the first time he had been stopped as a professional. It also saw Canelo Alvarez become the undisputed super middleweight champion, a title he still holds to this day.
In his post-championship career, Plant knocked out Anthony Dirrell, a former two-time WBC super middleweight champion, in a WBC super middleweight title eliminator on October 15, 2022. Plant celebrated his victory by miming digging his opponent's grave after the fight which was similar to former UFC champion, Tito Ortiz's post-fight antics.
Following that, Plant agreed to face David Benavidez, and their fight was scheduled to take place on March 25, 2023, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, marking the second time Plant would headline a pay-per-view. Plant started strong, but the pressure and power of Benavidez somewhat tired Plant as he would lose the fight via a unanimous decision.
In his personal life, Caleb Plant tragically lost his daughter, Alia Plant, in January 2015 due to a respiratory infection that developed into pneumonia, which has been a well-documented part of his story.
