Jaime Munguia, John Ryder, DAZN, Golden Boy Promotions

We are days away from supermiddleweight contender Jaime Munguia (42-0, 33 KOs) facing John Ryder (32-6, 18 KOs) in a fight that has the potential to become a war. Both men have flaws, so it will be a matter of who can make the least mistakes. Will the younger Munguia win, or will Ryder have one more memorable performance before hanging up the gloves?

JAIME MUNGUIA IS STARTING TO PEAK

Munguia has been criticized for years because he hasn’t fought anyone of note, even though he has had 42 fights. The time is now, and it started with a BWAA award-winning fight of the year in June against Sergiy Derevyanchenko. Now he is facing Ryder to add to his resume and hopefully land a fight later this year against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. With Canelo beating Ryder by decision, the comparisons will undoubtedly be at an all-time high after Munguia faces Ryder on Saturday night.

How does Munguia win this fight? He has to systematically break down Ryder, which means hard left hooks to the body early in the fight. Under Freddie Roach, there is no doubt that Munguia will be offensive-minded, so the breakdown blueprint will be there. It’s up to Munguia to execute it. After Ryder starts to lower those arms around the fifth round, Munguia can start teeing off to the head, leading to the late stoppage.

DOES JOHN RYDER HAVE ANYTHING LEFT?

It’s a question that will be on everyone’s mind leading up to fight night. Ryder went 12 rounds with Canelo in May, and although he went the distance, Ryder took a ton of punishment. Although he took some great learning experiences from sharing the ring with a talented fighter like Canelo, he likely left a piece of himself in Mexico. Ryder is now 35, and his best days are in the rearview.

For Ryder to win this fight, he must go to war with Munguia and punch with him. Munguia is horrible at bringing his hands back after throwing his punches, so that would be a window of opportunity for him. Ryder must hope to land enough big shots to try and stop Munguia before the fight goes the distance. Can Ryder pull it off? He has the pedigree to do so, but it may be too late in his career, and Munguia is on the ascend.
