Jaime Munguia, Gennadiy Golovkin or Puerto Rico - Matchroom CEO on Berlanga's next move

Popular New York super middleweight contender Edgar Berlanga got to work successfully with new promoters Matchroom last weekend with a wide points decision victory over Jason Quigley in his hometown.

The 168 pound division is currently under full occupation due to Saul Canelo Alvarez’s dominance. However, the layer underneath boxing’s biggest star is starting to put the other big names together.

“100 percent we would like to make the Berlanga Vs [Jaime] Munguia fight.” Frank Smith said in an exclusive interview for ProBox TV News. “We are both with DAZN and both want to deliver the best possible fights and Berlanga Vs Munguia is a tremendous fight. It is definitely the focus we are going to work on. He showed [in his last fight] that he was disappointed in some ways with his performance, but Jason Quigley put up a tremendous fight and was not going to give up at any point in that fight. I think you will just see him get better and better.”

Many options have been discussed for Berlanga’s next bout. Gennadiy Golovkin, Munguia and an offer from his ancestral land, Puerto Rico.

“That [Puerto Rico] is definitely something we are looking at, it is unlikely it will be a Munguia type fight though.” Smith continued. “But if we can deliver a great event in Puerto Rico and keep building him there, you know he has a huge fanbase over there, you saw that at the Garden last week, it was sold out. A show in Puerto Rico would again show the great atmosphere there would be, and we then keep building him into the star that he is. It is about taking the right type of fight there. But our focus is definitely delivering a big fight and Munguia is definitely at the forefront of that.”

Moving on to one of the best 160 pound fighters of a generation, Golovkin.

“I don’t know, he’s probably enjoying time with family for sure.” Smith Answered. “He vacated his belts and I understand why, the fights that are out there didn’t make sense. I would love to see a fight in Kazakhstan with Gennadiy Golovkin, I think he deserves that. That would be something John Ryder would be up for. But let's see, I’m not sure he made any decision over it yet. We will have to wait and see.”
