Recently crowned WBA world featherweight champion, Mauricio Lara, has indicated that he will be willing to give a rematch to Leigh Wood (26-3), the former WBA title holder. The pair fought an exciting affair in February, with Lara (26-2-1) sensationally flooring Wood in round seven, almost immediately forcing Wood to be withdrawn by his trainer Ben Davison. Recently, promoter Eddie Hearn indicated that a possible rematch could occur in the summer, potentially at the City Ground Stadium, Nottingham. It should also be noted that Leigh Wood has a rematch clause if he chooses to activate it, with speculation suggesting that Wood will likely activate the clause.
Lara spoke to the Mexican media outlet, Izquierdazo recently and has said that he has no issue with facing Wood again and that Wood deserves a rematch.
“My manager Alex (Brito) is checking about the rematch. I think that Wood gave me an opportunity without being mandatory, and as a (former) champion, he deserves a rematch. But whatever comes, I will take it”.
Regarding the contract clause, Lara has indicated that the option has not been taken up as of yet.
“Yes, there is a signed rematch clause (in the contract)," Lara said. “We don’t know yet (if Wood is going to activate it for an immediate rematch). That's what we are discussing, and with the passing of days, we will know what happens''.
Furthermore, Lara is open to all possibilities, which includes the former IBF world featherweight champion, Josh Warrington. The pair clashed following Lara’s win over win, with footage showing that Lara spat on Warrington as he was doing commentary duties for a radio broadcaster.
“Whatever my manager says”, Lara said. “He is going to put all the options on the table. What I say is that I want to be a solid champion. And I’m going to prepare myself for a rematch (with Wood), for a third fight with Warrington, or for anyone”.
