Lamont Roach Jr. now a free agent, purse bid May 25th for Hector Luis Garcia WBA fight

It has been a long wait for the super featherweight Lamont Roach Jr. to get a second chance at a world title. Roach Jr. came up short in 2019 in Fresno, California losing a close decision. Now, Roach Jr looks to win his first world title as he is set to face Hector Luis Garcia later this year, as a mandatory fight has been scheduled for a purse bid on Thursday, May 25th.

This comes on the breaking news that Roach Jr., who has been promoted for the majority of his career by Golden Boy Promotions will enter this fight without a promoter.

When asked more about his fan base in the Oxon Hill, Maryland region in which Roach Jr., trains with his father, Lamont Roach Sr., as well as his standout amateur fighter, Jordan Roach, and a highly touted prospect Benjamin Johnson. Roach Jr., outlined why fighting at home is so appealing on the eve of one of the biggest events of his career.

“[I sold out the MGM Grand in Oxon Hill, Maryland], and mind you that night was a Thursday night,” said Roach Jr. about his fight in his hometown back in 2017. “On top of that, the [Washington Football Team] was playing the Cowboys, here at home [on Thursday Night Football].”

As for the process, Roach Jr. further explained the process which leads to what he hopes is the biggest moment in his young life, that of which getting a world title shot.

“I am just glad that [the fight] is getting made,” said Roach Jr. with a subtle hint of frustration in his voice. “I am just glad that the process is going well. Something has to happen, no matter what, and we are going to know on the 25th [of May].”

As for the outcome. Roach Jr., is confident in a win but would like a knockout - honestly in the sport of boxing, who wouldn’t? The sentiment from the Roach Jr camp is simple - Roach Jr doesn’t just want to win, he wants to look to become the face of the 130-lb division if not one of the key players in the division. To do that, Roach Jr. knows he has to win in a specific fashion.

“For me, I expect to be victorious in a very good fashion,” said Roach Jr. “I want to use this fight to not just become a world champion, but too showcase I have star ability. I want to be a superstar in this sport, and Hector Garcia happens to be my first victim….I am going to try my best to stop [Hector Luis Garcia]. [Without a doubt], we will be ready for twelve [rounds], for sure. So if I am ready for twelve that means [Garcia] might go early as well.”
