Mexican legend and four-weight world champion, Juan Manuel Marquez, is no stranger to fights which are nothing short of warfare if you look back at his remarkable and successful career. The World Boxing Organisation (WBO) recently ordered an all Mexican affair between former two-weight world champions Oscar Valdez & Emanuel Navarrete to contest the WBO World super-featherweight title. The fight would be one of the most exciting fights to be made in 2023 and add flavour tot he title mix in the super-featherweight divison. The WBO has given a deadline of November 19th to conclude a deal.
Marquez gave his thoughts regarding the contest and predics it could be an all out despite Valdez’s more technical style of fighting.
"It's an interesting fight too, a war between Mexicans. Fights between Mexicans are always wars," said Marquez to BDC Boxing. "Let's see what kind of boxing Navarrete uses against Valdez, who is more technical, and likes to exchange blows and the Navarrete does as well.
"If they want to exchange punches, I think it will be a good fight, very interesting, with a reserved outcome, it is a punch-for-punch fight, from the first to the twelve [round]" Marquez said.
Valdez recently suffered the first defeat of his career to Shakur Stevenson and will be looking to bounce back to the top table after a successful WBC title also in the super-featherweight divison whilst Navarrete remains undefeated wih successful ureigns as world champion a super-bantamweight and featherweight. Marquez is leaning towards the younger Navarrete.
"I think [Navarrete] is in his best moment right now. Navarrete has something that is very important in this type of fight: he is at his best. I think that Navarrete is in his prime and that is very good for him [in this fight]."
