Anthony Joshua vs. Otto Wallin: Preview, Prediction & Betting Odds

The Day of Reckoning on DAZN PPV is almost here, and the fighters on the card are saying all of the right things. Heavyweights Anthony Joshua (26-3, 23 KOs) and Otto Wallin (26-1, 14 KOs) look focused and ready to put on a show. Can Joshua win and punch his side of the ticket for a fight with Deontay Wilder in March? Will the betting underdog Wallin pull the upset and insert his name into a big fight card next year?

ONCE AGAIN, ANTHONY JOSHUA IS IN A POSITION TO WIN BIG

When Joshua’s career is over, he can never say that he wasn’t put in a position time after time to win big. He’s had every opportunity to win a world title, has been paid handsomely throughout his career, and is now on the brink of a major payday. So, what’s in the way? Wallin is, and on Saturday, all Joshua has to do is beat Wallin, and he gets Wilder, which likely earns him upwards of 50 million. That’s enough to hang up the gloves, but knowing how Joshua continues to get opportunities, more than likely, he will keep fighting. While Joshua has often shown he can be rattled mentally, he seems focused for this one even though he went with Ben Davidson instead of Derrick James to prepare for Wallin.

How does Joshua win this fight, and does he need to do it in a big way? A Joshua victory gets him the Wilder fight, but if he were to knock out Wallin and Wilder is also successful, the world may end up stopping in March. Joshua needs to keep Wallin guessing and go down to the body more than most of his previous fights so that he can slow him down. If Joshua can use a few feints and consistently work the body early in the fight, he can have an opening late to knock out Wallin or go on to a decisive victory.

WILL OTTO WALLIN DO SOMETHING ABOUT ALL OF THE DISRESPECT?

It’s no secret the angle being taken coming into fight night and the Day of Reckoning event. If you have any doubts, the digital posters created for the event all have a common theme: Joshua and Wilder, side by side so that the idea can capture the fans' imagination. The media has amplified this by reporting an agreed-upon date of March 9 between Joshua & Wilder. Wallin hears and sees all of this, but the question is whether he can do something about it. At times, that type of disrespect is all a fighter needs to be motivated and pull off an upset. Wallin will need that and much more to finish the fight with his hand raised in victory.

Wallin needs to take a chapter from Joshua’s fight against Oleksandr Usyk while adding what he did against Tyson Fury four years ago. Wallin has to apply smart pressure and keep that right jab in the face of Joshua all night long. He will have to overcome Joshua’s left jab by circling to his right and mitigating the four-inch reach advantage Joshua has over him. Joshua gets frustrated very quickly, and if Wallin can make it a boring fight, he can catch him dozing off and land that straight left down the middle. If Wallin can mix that up with some smart inside fighting, he may be able to come away with a decision victory.

ANTHONY JOSHUA VS. OTTO WALLIN PREDICTION

Although Wallin will likely win the battle, he won’t win the war, which means losing to Joshua by a controversial decision. Joshua by majority decision.
