We have finally arrived to fight week for one of the most intriguing matchups of the year. WBO super lightweight champion Josh Taylor (19-0, 13 KOs) will put his title and undefeated record on the line against former unified lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez (18-1, 13 KOs). The fight will take place in New York City at the Hulu Theater inside the Madison Square Garden.
We last saw Taylor about sixteen months ago when he faced Jack Catterall (27-1, 13 KOs) and earned a split-decision victory in a razor-close fight. There was plenty of chatter on social media about the fight, and they were going to do a rematch, but after a few delays from Taylor, Catterall moved on. Now Taylor faces Lopez as he counts down the number of fights left at super lightweight.
On the other hand, Lopez fought only about seven months ago, but he was also in a close fight as he came away with a split decision victory over Sandor Martin (40-3, 13 KOs). Lopez struggled against the southpaw Martin, so it’ll be interesting to see how he does with the southpaw Taylor. Can Lopez put aside his personal issues and create a vintage “The Takeover” type of performance?
