Josh Taylor responds to Teofimo Lopez's controversial comments

WBO world super-lightweight champion, Josh Taylor (19-0, 13KOs), has responded to comments by Teofimo Lopez (18-1, 13KOs), who said in a recent interview that he aims to take the life of Taylor when they meet in the ring on June 10th at the MSG Theater in New York.

Lopez made the comments when speaking to Punch Drunk Boxing, and the immediate reaction to the comments raised eyebrows, with many industry figures branding the comments as distasteful. Lopez questioned Taylor’s heart before commenting about aiming to take Taylor’s life and adding that he is not “sorry” regarding the comments.

“When I fought [Lomachenko], I took his heart, especially in that twelfth round … boom, I won the fight,” Lopez said to Punch Drunk Boxing. “With Taylor, he don’t got no heart. So what can I really take from this man? His life. His life. The only way I’mma make a statement is by doing that. I’m not sorry about that.

“I know people are going to twist my words again on this one. But you know something? I don’t give a flying fuck. I don’t care because this is the sport that we are in. and it sucks to see so many pass away especially some young ones.”

Taylor, however, was not concerned regarding the comments made by Lopez and responded justifiably in an abrupt fashion when the comments made by Lopez were put to him by BroBible.

“He can come try and take my life, let’s see who is the one who ends up in the back of an ambulance, that may be a horrible comment back but let him come and try, let’s see what happens, good on him. Let him take his best shot.”
