The women’s IBF welterweight title will be on the line this weekend as Natasha Jonas (14-2-1, 9 KOs) will defend against Mikaela Mayer (19-1, 5 KOs). Although Mayer is moving up in weight, the odds are fairly tight as the 39-year-old Jonas hasn’t been as active as Mayer.
It’ll be interesting to see how Mayer moves around the ring with the added weight, as she has gone from super featherweight to now welterweight within 15 months. Her last fight was in September as she scored a decision victory over Silvia Bortot. Although a knockout will likely not happen, as Mayer has only scored five in her career, she will have to put her boxing skills on display and dominate to leave the UK with the title.
The champion Jonas scored a TKO victory in July against Kandi Wyatt, her only fight in 2023. Jonas is knocking on the door of 40, and this may be the fight where her age catches up to her. Can Jonas keep the younger Mayer at bay and do enough to keep the title around her waist?
