Carlos Adames did what Jermall Charlo couldn’t do, and stop Juan Macias Montiel, and they want the world to know it.
A relatively boring fight ended quickly in the third round as Adames landed a series of big shots, which now makes Adames the mandatory challenger for Jermall Charlo’s middleweight WBC title.
Adames, who now trains with Bob Santos, made it clear he wouldn’t be shocked if Jermall Charlo went in a different direction, as Charlo has been out of the ring since June of 2021.
“Well, you know, again, I think Charlo is one of the most talented fighters there is out there,” Santos said during a post-fight press conference late Saturday night to a gathering of reporters at the Dignity Health Sports Park. “His record speaks for itself. That said, obviously I’ve been with Erislandy Lara for a lot of his career. So, I’ve watched him and Charlo spar many, many times. And I’m pretty familiar with him. And he’s a great fighter. But Carlos Adames is different; he’s a different animal. He’s a different animal and I have no doubt that Carlos Adames, if we fight him, is gonna be victorious. There’s no doubt in my mind.”
In short, Santos is simply saying - his fighter, Adames might be too dangerous for a fighter coming off an extended lay-off like Charlo.
“So, you know, he has a choice – he can either give up the title or he’s gonna fight us. And if he fights us, there’s no doubt in my mind that Carlos Adames is gonna beat him. I’ve seen [Adames] in there with Caleb Plant. He’s been in there with [David] Benavidez. I know what he’s capable of doing. They know what he’s capable of doing. And I’m telling you right now, take it to the bank – this man will beat Charlo. No doubt in my mind. And I have the utmost respect for the Charlos.”
Jermall Charlo is one of the most inactive current champions, rivaling Demetrius Andrade in that regard, as his fight against Maciej Sulecki was postponed due to a back injury, with no return date set, or if Sulecki will even get that opportunity still.
Regardless, Adames is ready for Charlo, per these quotes from his trainer.
