Jaron 'Boots' Ennis vs. Roiman Villa: Preview, Prediction & Betting Odds

Showtime Boxing heads to the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, NJ, on Saturday as they host an interim welterweight title fight. Interim IBF champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis (30-0, 27 KOs) faces the tough Roiman Villa (26-1, 24 KOs) in a fight that looks to either further solidify a future star in Ennis or birth a new one in Villa. Although this will go head-to-head with the card on DAZN, it looks like the timing will work out so that we can enjoy one after the other instead of trying to watch them both simultaneously.

IS JARON ‘BOOTS’ ENNIS READY TO REACH THAT NEXT LEVEL IN HIS CAREER?

It seems like this question has already been answered, but has it? Ennis has looked impressive, mostly against guys that he should have. We haven’t seen him dominate some of the big names in the division, which isn’t his fault. Who wants to face a 5’10” welterweight with a 74-inch reach with hand speed that reminds you of a young Sugar Ray Leonard? No one does, and that’s part of the problem. Sometimes it feels like he gets bored in there, and Ennis needs to share the ring with the likes of Keith Thurman, Yordenis Ugas, or Alexis Rocha to see how truly gifted he is. I know Villa is rated #2 by the IBF; therefore, Ennis has to fight him, but after this fight, we need to see him against the more prominent names, and I think we will.

This fight may not help his cause as Ennis will likely blow past Villa, as it’s an example of perfect matchmaking. Ennis will look great on Saturday night, but the time is now more than ever that we see him with the bigger names in the division to show how special of a talent he really is.

ROIMAN VILLA LOOKS TO MAKE IT TWO UPSETS IN A ROW ON SHOWTIME

When Villa showed up at the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, the thought was that he was going to be the opponent that put Rashidi Ellis back on track toward a major fight that would have been against Ennis. Little did anyone know that Villa had other plans and fought his heart out that night. Even though the scores were tight, Villa pulled out the majority decision and will now be in Atlantic City looking to do it again. The problem is that Ennis is on a different level, and Villa will have to be in the best shape of his life if he wants to come out victorious against Ennis. Does Villa have another upset special in his bag of tricks?

Villa does possess the punching power to slow Ennis down, and he’ll have to work the body to get a headshot later in the fight. It’s just going to be an uphill battle trying to get to Ennis, and before he can get there, Ennis may have landed enough punches to have the fight stopped. Villa will be game on Saturday night, but will it be enough?

JARON ‘BOOTS’ ENNIS VS. ROIMAN VILLA PREDICTION

Although Ennis wasn’t as sharp as he could’ve been last time out, he did learn from it, and this time we will see a more composed ‘Boots,’ which will result in cleaner shots landed and lightning-fast combinations. Ennis will stop Villa around the sixth round and will wait for the dust to settle between Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford to determine what his next move is going to be.
