Saturday night marks the return of heavyweight prospect Jared ‘Big Baby’ Anderson (14-0, 14 KOs). His opponent was the former IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin (29-3-1, 26 KOs), and he is taking this fight on short notice. The Huntington Center in Toledo, OH, will play host for the event as it will broadcast live on all of ESPN’s platforms.
WILL THE MOMENT BE TOO MUCH FOR JARED ANDERSON, OR IS THIS WHERE HE BREAKS OUT?
As a potential heavyweight star, Anderson has everything you need: knockout power, looks, and charisma. The 23-year-old heavyweight is the main event on Saturday night in his hometown of Toledo, OH, which can bring enormous pressure to perform. It’s a lot for a fighter his age to have a certain level of fame and notoriety while trying to avoid letting it suffocate you. The Top Rank cameras caught some of this earlier in the week as they captured a moment Anderson Shared with Hall of Famer Roy Jones Jr. Anderson shared how the moment can be tough to handle, and Jones Jr. reassured him that he is ready for it all. It was a father/son type of moment but one that often plays out between a veteran fighter and one that is coming up seeking the advice of a legend.
Saturday’s fight for Anderson is more about getting to the ring without having a panic attack than the fight itself. When you are the main event at home, everyone will pull you in different directions, and you only want to fight. Once Anderson enters the ring and settles down, he will show why Top Rank keeps calling him “The next great American Heavyweight.”
CAN ‘PRINCE’ CHARLES MARTIN PLAY SPOILER ON ESPN?
Let’s face it, Martin had his one moment as the IBF champion and lost it a few months later. Since then, he’s earned some solid wins but came up short against Adam Kownacki (20-4, 15 KOs) while being stopped by Luis Ortiz (33-3, 28 KOs) on New Year’s Day last year. What can he do against a rising prospect like Anderson? Nothing, and the 37-year-old Martin is going to learn real quick why you don’t take a fight against Anderson at the last minute. Let’s hope it lasts a few rounds before it’s all over.
