Jamie Conlan: Working with Bob Arum and the future for Irish Boxing

Jamie Conlan quickly turned to promotion and management upon his career ending in 2017. Conlan has since taken charge of his brother, Michael Conlan’s career and is also co-promoting alongside Bob Arum in his native Belfast.

Conlan spoke exclusively to ProBox TV News to discuss working with the BHOF promoter and what the future holds for Irish boxing.

“I’m very lucky to be promoting alongside Bob Arum.” Said Conlan. “I’m very blessed to be in the position I am. Working alongside Bob Arum, Top Rank, Frank Warren and Queensbury, promoting our own shows on BT Sport and ESPN, I’m very blessed to be in the position I am. During that career trajectory from fighter to manager, manager to promoter, Top Rank guided me along that road and gave me guidance when matching Michael with the likes of Miguel Marriaga.

Arum and Conlan combine powers for a third straight fight in Belfast on May 27, when Michael Conlan (18-1, 9 KOs) challenges Luis Alberto Lopez for the IBF World Featherweight title.

“It’s a big week for Irish boxing.” Conlan stated. “Katie Taylor challenges Chantelle Cameron at the weight above for an undisputed fight the week before Michael faces Luis Alberto Lopez. Who I think will be one of the toughest champions you can come across, he’s showed that by coming to fight an Irish man here. It’s going to be a huge week for Ireland.

“We need both Katie and Michael to win and be successful for the future of Irish boxing. We need to build fighters off the back of fighters like this because we need to draw people towards Irish boxing for years to come. Nights like these don't just come around too often, weeks like these have never come around. It’s pivotal that Michael and Katie come though and we use that trajectory to build future world champions. There will be a great opportunity for the lads fighting on the undercards to really grow themselves and fly the flag for years to come.”
