Saturday night, Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN return to the Toyota Arena in Ontario, CA, for a super middleweight feature. 26-year-old undefeated fighter Jaime Munguia (41-0, 33 KOs) looks to continue to test the waters above middleweight as he challenges the tough Sergiy Derevyanchenko (14-4, 10 KOs). This will be Munguia’s first fight this year as he looks to earn a victory over a tough veteran and, more importantly, work his way towards a world title or a Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez fight.
Munguia has received a ton of criticism throughout the years since we continue to see him fight these B-level fighters with no pathway to a world title or a Grade A dance partner. Munguia did stay busy last year and fought three times which is a rarity these days, with his November fight ending by third-round knockout. Can he have that type of performance against a fighter who took many next-level fighters the distance, like Gennadiy ‘GGG’ Golovkin.
Derevyanchenko has been as tough as they come but has also been extremely inactive. In the last three years, he has had one fight a year, and that just isn’t going to cut it if you want to beat some of boxing’s best. He last fought in July, scoring a unanimous decision victory over Joshua Conley (17-5-1, 11 KOs). Now the 37-year-old Derevyanchenko looks to give Munguia a run for his money while setting himself up for a potentially bigger fight in the future.
