Jaime Munguia was hoping to fight John Ryder, a super middleweight contender with a big win over Daniel Jacobs recently, but when that fell through he was not sure he’d fight again in 2022.
“I was obviously disappointed to find out that fight fell through,” Munguia told Jake Donovan of BoxingScene.com. “It sounded like we had a fight lined up with (Ryder) for the end of October. I was already in training camp. Then we were told the fight was no longer happening and I wasn’t going to fight at all on that date.”
Munguia is fighting Saturday against s Argentina’s Gonzalo Gaston Coria, someone who the most hardcore of fight fans don’t know, which will be broadcast on DAZN, from Guadalajara, Mexico.
“When the fight with John Ryder fell through, I thought that was going to be it for the year.”
Munguia’s career has been rough from a fan perspective. A world champion four years ago, we have seen him slowly move back in terms of competition, which is confusing and shocking to some as he might be one of the better fighters in the division. This might not be the opponent the fans wanted, but Munguia is happy to just get one more fight in.
“I’m extremely grateful to be fighting again in Mexico. It’s not the year I expected but I am fighting for the third time in 2022. I’m gaining more experience with each fight and staying active helps me continue to grow as a fighter. I was training for a big fight but unfortunately, it didn’t line up for me,” said Munguia.“I really hope that 2023 brings a fight but I am grateful to once again embrace and fight in front of all my people.”
