Isaac Cruz vs Giovanni Cabrera Will Fight In July, Says Gibbons

Over the past two years, Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz has become a beloved folk hero in Mexican boxing and in the L.A. area. His fight against Gervonta Davis, which some to this day feel that he won, elevated him in terms of the world rankings as opposed to lowering his ranking.

In Stockton, California, Sean Gibbons was in the building to provide support for a fighter he works with Vincent Astrolabio, who lost a close decision to Jason Moloney. In the midst of all the fight week activities, ProBox TV News caught up with Gibbons to get an update on the career of Isaac Cruz, someone Gibbons has worked with closley.

Since losing a unanimous decision loss to Gervonta Davis, Isaac Cruz has not missed a step. Cruz knocked out Yuriorkis Gamboa in April of 2022 and then concluded his year with a second-round KO of Eduardo Ramirez. The Ramirez fight which was on the Andy Ruiz Jr versus Luis Ortiz pay-per-view undercard at the crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California saw a large amount of local support get behind Cruz when he got the KO win.

A fight with Gervonta Davis one of the most profitable fighters in boxing right now, as well as one of the biggest stars in the sport, would be lucrative and entertaining, for the fighters and fans. Gibbons feels that despite the good showing Cruz had in that bout, Cruz was a little green and has learned from that fight.

“The first fight [with Tank Davis] was a very close fight,” recalled Gibbons. “You can make an argument either way on who won the fight. “‘Pitbull’ [Cruz] at that time was still very inexperienced. [Cruz has] got to win in July and then he will be back hopefully against Tank.”

As for his opponent, Giovanni Cabrera, who trains out of the Wild Card Boxing Gym, in Hollywood, California, with Freddie Roach. Cabrera is a real throwback fighter, built on the regional scene with matchmaker Andy Nance, Cabrera has beaten seven undefeated fighters and two widely considered good fighters, most notably Gabe Flores Jr. Cabrera seemingly is a promotional free agent meaning this fight, which has been rumored to land on July 22nd, but not been confirmed by any parties involved, could land on any network without any conflict from Cabrera’s side. Prior to defeating Flores, Cabrera was signed to Top Rank Inc.

“[Cabrera] is a very difficult fighter to fight,” stated Gibbons. “Awkward, hardstyle, but I think Pitbull just has a little more with the pressure and that should be the difference.”
