Despite the rumors, Hector Luis Garcia couldn’t believe he was in a mega-fight with boxing star Gervonta Davis, until Friday morning when the January 7th bout was announced officially.
With Garcia’s WBA 130 lbs. title on the line Gervonta Davis will face Hector Luis Garcia on Showtime Pay-Per-View from the Capital One Arena in Washington D.C.
Despite being the champion, Garcia, is the underdog in many people’s eyes, but this is a familiar spot for him.
“Tank thinks this is an easy fight, but I’m thankful for the opportunity,” Garcia said to Keith Idec of BoxingScene.com. “He has already got the other fight lined up [with Ryan Garcia]. It’s the same as with [Chris] Colbert. He’s overlooking me.”
Last year, Garcia became a household name, by dethroning Chris Colbert, someone Showtime was pushing as a star, but had to halt the breaks on, after his one-sided loss to Garcia, and Colbert hasn’t returned to the ring since.
The backstory to this bout is Davis has another fight allegedly scheduled for next spring against Ryan Garcia, which would be a mega-fight. Garcia is by no means a tune-up, and taking him with a big money fight on the line is risky, and screams of being a trap fight.
“I’m looking forward to this fight,” Hector Luis Garcia said. “I know that Tank is at the top. I’ve been really motivated, but it does give me a little extra motivation because I wanna show that I’m the top dog. For sure, I wanna show that I’m the better Garcia. I’m the one that’s gonna be on top.”
