Gennadiy Golovkin is looking to define his career in what more than likely will be his last pro fight finishing out a trilogy with Canelo Alvarez, this Saturday, September 17th, on DAZN PPV, and also available on PPV.com.
For those unaware, Golovkin should’ve won the first fight which was called a draw, Canelo won a close fight against Golovkin that many still felt Golovkin won the second time around, and now nearly four years to the date of their last fight, they will conclude their trilogy.
Yet, it isn’t that simple. In 2018, the two were scheduled to meet, but Canelo tested positive for Clenbuterol forcing the fight to be scrapped and moved to Los Angeles, California, as Golovkinfaced Vanes Martirosyan. Canelo’s team has done an impressive job at not acknowledging this, but Golovkin doesn’t want the fans to forget this.
“I don’t think this can ever be forgotten,” Golovkin said when speaking to the NY Daily News. “Some people came to terms with that situation. Some people don’t want to continue thinking about it. Some are turning their eyes away from it.
Golovkin in this same article wrote a scathing review of Canelo simply stating that the judges no longer look at Canelo as some invincible fighter.
“In his last fight, the knockout was not necessary,” Golovkin said. “It’s encouraging that the judges are not loyal to Canelo anymore. They don’t feel this burden of his image.”
When asked what Canelo’s biggest downfall will be on Saturday night, Golovkin made it simple.
“Arrogance,” said Golovkin. “…and arrogance is punishable.”
