Today, Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin checked into the MGM Grand for fight week, ahead of their September 17th fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, which is available on DAZN PPV and PPV.com.
The two fighters arrived in luxury cars, walked through fans and media as well as faced off for the first time on fight week. We got the pageantry that we expect from a big fight week, and more so, we got quotes that we can overthink for the next few days.
“We all saw how he behaved, what he said about his possible fights with Usyk, Makabu, with fighting heavyweights,” Golovkin said through a translator. “And even now, he continues to say that he’s ready to take any challenge, that he’s not afraid. Maybe he just wants to kind of save face. But at the same time, we see that what he said during press conferences showed that he didn’t take Dmitry Bivol seriously and that fight seriously. So, I think he drew his conclusions that this loss kind of brought him back to Earth. And as a result, he will change.”
Golovkin, who has had to wait four years and one global pandemic to conclude his trilogy with Canelo Alvarez, in which the first fight was a draw, the second fight was a split-decision win for Canelo, and according to the record book - Golovkin has yet to beat Canelo. Yet, a lot of fans think Golovkin is 2-0 against the former pound-for-pound #1 fighter.
“He probably lost touch with reality,” Golovkin said about Canelo when facing Dmitry Bivol. “…and believed that he was invincible.”
It is clear that Golovkin is preparing for the best version of Canelo Alvarez, come Saturday on pay-per-view.
