Current unified middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin believes he should’ve been the victor on Saturday night pay-per-view main event, trilogy bout against Canelo Alvarez.
“I don’t feel that I lost the fight,” Golovkin stated afterward via a translator. “I don’t think about the loss. It’s not something that is on my mind right now because it was a great fight and it was a very clean fight, as you noticed. And we did not allow any mistakes. And the fight was very competitive. And especially in the second half, I felt that I was better than my opponent.”
The 40-year-old fighter, Golovkin, who started very slow, felt that his activity in the second half of the fight was the difference. Two of the three judges nearly agreed as David Sutherland and Steve Weisfeld had it 115-113 for Canelo, meaning Golovkin was only a round away from a draw.
“It’s not up to me to talk about scoring,” Golovkin said. “I just did my job and the judges came up with those scores. That’s their decision.”
So despite the record books saying Golovkin never won a fight against Canelo Alvarez, Golovkin feels he won all three meetings.
