Gervonta Davis Trainer: I Want Tank To Punish Ryan Garcia, We Train For Punishment

Clavin Ford, the trainer of Gervonta Davis (28-0, 26KOs), has already made clear what the game plan is going to be for “Tank” when he steps in the ring against Ryan Garcia (23-0, 19KOs) on April 22nd. If Ford has his way and Davis can execute, it will be a painful night, according to the head trainer of Davis.

The contest, which is being held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, is set to be one of the most anticipated fights of 2023. Ford feels that no fighter has brought out the best of Gervonta to date, but preparing Davis for whatever Garcia puts in front of him and has every confidence that he can negate the challenge of Garcia.

“’Tank’ just needs to listen and do what he’s been doing all along. I’ve seen the journey to here a long time ago. That night is his night. We’ll walk through that fire or that desert or whatever we have to walk through.

“I’m still looking for that fighter to bring the best out of ‘Tank’. No one has seen the best out of him yet. Coaches that have been around us for years know that people haven’t seen all that he can do."

Garcia, on the night, will be taller than Davis, with a size and reach advantage over the five-time world champion. However, Davis handled a much larger Hector Luis Garcia in January and claimed a stoppage inside nine rounds. Ford says that performance does not indicate what to expect against Garcia but shows his versatility as a fighter regarding what each opponent brings.

“I don’t train ‘Tank’ for knockouts, I train him for punishment. Hector Luis Garcia got a glimpse of it in the last fight. I want him to punish Ryan.

“I wouldn’t say the Mario Barrios fight is the example of how ‘Tank’ fights a taller fighter like Ryan Garcia, because each fighter fights differently. He was able to handle what Barrios wanted to do, but we’ll see if that’s how Ryan wants to fight. Whatever you want to bring, you better come bring it.

“He’s taking pages out from some of the greatest in the sport. We’ve got a lot of different people coaching different parts of his game and everyone is doing their part.”
