This past Saturday in Las Vegas saw an ageing Gennadiy Golovkin lose by unanimous decision at the hands of Saul Canelo Alvarez, bringing the end to needle-ridden trilogy.
Golovkin just took far too long to get going against an assertive and busy Canelo. The jab that has served the Kazakh so well in his career was almost nowhere to be seen in the first half of the fight, however Golovkin did finish strong in the championship rounds.
At 40 years old the question of retirement persists for Golovkin, however he seemed far from that decision during his post fight interview with DAZN when asked ‘Will you continue?’
“Absolutely! I have a great plan, I have great opponents. Remember guys, that I still have three belts at 160. I will come back guys, I’m still champion, I’m still champion.”
Golovkin debuted in super middleweight division for the first time in his career that spanned over sixteen years this past Saturday with Canelo. His comments clearly suggested a return back to a division he made his own for many years until the introduction to Canelo at 160 pounds.
Golovkin stil holds the WBA and IBF versions of the middleweight world title, a unification bout with WBC champion Jermall Charlo would likely be celebrated by boxing fans. A homecoming against fellow Kazakh and WBO champion Zhanibek Alimkhanuly would also be an appetizing prospect for Golovkin to end an illustrious career.
Chris Eubank Jr took straight to Twitter to suggest himself as option for Gennadiy Golovkin to bounce back against. Simply put, despite time creeping up on the unified middleweight world champion, his options are plenty.
