WBC world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has reiterated that he is only interested in big fights, and that seemingly does not include boxing the likes of Anthony Joshua anytime soon.
Fury is set to face Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia next month in a ten-round non-title fight, which has drawn differing opinions across the boxing industry. Fury, however, has insisted that he is involved in the big fights and will continue to do so, just not in the context most boxing fans would desire.
One of those fights fans would want him to participate in would be against domestic rival and two-time unified world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.
In the previous twelve months, there have been two offers from Fury and his promotional handlers [Frank Warren and Top Rank] made to Joshua. However, no deal could be agreed.
Following the rejection of Fury’s proposals for a contest by Joshua, Fury reiterated that he now has no interest in facing Joshua now while comparing him to a gym sweeper when speaking to IFLTV and that he is not facing worthy competition since his back-to-back defeats to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021-22 respectively.
“There is no AJ to me, is there? He’s a gym sweeper. Sweeps the gym floors and that. Gets beat up on by people. He’s like an old journeyman now. If you’re a decent heavyweight and you want to beat up on somebody, call him out. You’ll beat him easy. Sausage.”
When pushed further by IFLTV if he will ever face Joshua, Fury replied, “Nah, never.”
Fury then continues to add that he wants to prove that he is the best fighter on the planet and wants to fight the likes of UFC champion Jon Jones in a cage and test his actual fighting ability, not just in a boxing sense.
“I’m on to the big fights. And I don’t mean the big men; I mean the big boys. Him, Ngannou, and Jon Jones in a cage. I want challenges. Not easy bait. They’re all bums, the boxers. I’ve already proved I’m the best boxer on the planet. Now I want to prove I’m the best fighter on the planet.”
