Regis Prograis name was thrown in the mix with Ryan Garcia, by veteran boxing promoter and hall-of-fame boxer, Oscar De La Hoya, of Golden Boy Promotions
Regis Prograis has been in the hardest fight of his life, but none of which includes a fistfight, as getting an opponent has become a full-time job. Despite being the WBC super lightweight world champion, he has failed to entice Jose Ramirez or Teofimo Lopez, as both fighters opted for different directions in their career.
“Contrary to rumors and reports @GoldenBoyBoxing is 100% trying to finalize #tankgarcia although @RPrograis fight with Ryan is very intriguing, we are focused on taking the #tankgarcia fight to the finish line,” said Oscar De La Hoya on via Twitter, on February 8th, after De La Hoya had hypothesized of Regis Prograis as potential opponent for Ryan Garcia.
Veteran Texas coach, who has worked with Regis Prograis for what seems like forever as Prograis would proclaim many years ago that his coach Bobby Benton would one day be a household name, is fulfilling his fighter's prediction. The hope that lingers is Jack Catterall, who recently lost out on his Josh Taylor rematch.
“Ryan [Garcia] is bigger than [Gervonta Davis], but [he isn’t] as big as Regis [Prograis],” said Bobby Benton when speaking exclusively with this reporter about the mythical Ryan Garcia versus Regis Prograis match-up. “Physically, [long pause] I just think Regis would break Ryan down physically.”
Not unlike any fight you purpose to Regis Prograis, and his team, they typically have one answer - and that is yes. Prograis’ coach sees the fight ending in a finish, and at the very least being rather one-sided after a certain point given the size and strength of Regis Prograis compared to Ryan Garcia.
“[Regis Prograis would] just muscle through [Ryan Garcia’s punches],” furthered Benton. “Eventually, [Regis Prograis] would break [Ryan Garcia] down."
