Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez says that their fighter has what it takes to overcome favorite Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis in their highly anticipated clash at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night. But he acknowledges that he is going to have to fight close to a perfect fight to do so.
“We like our chances,” he told the Showtime Boxing Podcast. “He's got all the qualities. He's got the speed advantage. Height, definitely. Length. He's gonna have to fight a perfect fight; he can't let his guard down with Tank. One punch can end it. But vice versa. Ryan's got a left hook, lightning hands. He can punch with both hands. It makes for a great fight. It's gonna be Ryan using his lane, Tank trying to get on the inside. Who's gonna win that battle?”
Gomez bristled at the suggestion that Golden Boy had been reticent to make the fight and that Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) had had to force them into it.
Gomez did, however, acknowledge that the fact that both Garcia and Davis (28-0, 26 KOs) were so keen to make the contest happen was the deciding factor in getting over the line.
“Everybody did their part; most importantly, both fighters wanted it.,” he said. “And this is a great learning lesson. Young fighters, champions, I don't care who you are, if you really want to fight, you go to your manager, agent, promoters, and you demand: “This is what I want.” It starts with them. If they don't want the fight, then there are excuses. And they wanted it. And we wanted it. That notion that we didn't is something that [Davis’ team] are peddling. But it's fake.”
