We have finally arrived at the fight week for one of the most anticipated welterweight fights on the calendar, which has seen its delays but looks to be on. WBA regular welterweight champion Eimantas Stanionis (14-0, 9 KOs) faces Vergil Ortiz Jr. (19-0, 19 KOs) live on DAZN from the AT&T Center in San Antonio, TX. This fight has been postponed twice, and it looks like we will get the fight we have all been waiting for this time.
Stanionis has been flying under the radar but is a big, strong, young welterweight. The original date for this fight was March 18th, but Stanionis had to undergo emergency surgery for appendicitis. Now the WBA champ gets to main event on DAZN while facing one of the most dangerous fighters in the division. Stanionis will, without a doubt, be the most formidable challenge of Ortiz Jr.’s young career.
Ortiz Jr. has been under scrutiny as he pulled out of the April 29th date for rhabdomyolysis. There were rumors that Ortiz Jr. was heavier than usual coming into training camp, which led to him getting this condition, but Ortiz Jr. quickly denied such claims. The last time Ortiz Jr. was in the ring was about 11 months ago when he stopped Michael McKinson (25-1, 4 KOs) in the ninth round of their bout. Ortiz Jr. is now in his first world title fight and looks to show everyone why he has been considered a future world champion for the last few years.
