Edgar Berlanga vs. Jason Quigley: Preview, Prediction & Betting Odds

On Saturday night, the self-proclaimed “Monster” returns to the Hulu Theater inside the Madison Square Garden as he looks to once again capture the imagination of the NYC fight fans. Edgar ‘The Chosen One’ Berlanga (20-0, 16 KOs) will face Jason Quigley (20-2, 14 KOs) in a fight promoted by Matchroom Boxing and streamed on DAZN.

WHO IS EDGAR BERLANGA?

I don’t ask that question to find out who Berlanga is because I already know that. I’m asking who Berlanga is when it comes to his boxing style. Are we going to see the man that scored sixteen straight knockout victories with a vicious offensive attack, or will we see the more cautious version who got knocked down for the first time in his pro career? The Demond Nicholson (26-5-1, 22 KOs) fight in April 2021 keeps coming to mind as the point where things changed for Berlanga. Yes, Berlanga scored some knockdowns, but Nicholson took him to the final bell and exposed some of his defensive flaws. From there, his next three opponents took Berlanga the distance, and he was no longer getting those fancy highlight reel knockouts. Maybe he was on the receiving end of good matchmaking with Top Rank, which made Berlanga look indestructible. Whatever it was, we are here now, and Berlanga desperately wants to appeal to the Puerto Rican community and become their next big star.

Berlanga needs to return to his old form and throw caution to the wind against Quigley. He cannot afford another ten-round decision, as fans will quickly lose interest in what he has to offer. Also, you can forget about a Canelo Alvarez fight if he can’t stop Quigley before the end of the fight. So which version of Berlanga will we get? Hopefully, the one that made Fat Joe put his name on one of his songs so that we all get a fun fight.

JASON QUIGLEY CAN GO FROM GATEKEEPER TO TITLE CONTENDER OVERNIGHT

Quigley made a name for himself while fighting under the Golden Boy Promotions banner and collecting wins in Southern California. After losing to Demetrius Andrade (32-0, 19 KOs) in November 2021, Quigley disappeared and didn’t reappear until April, when he scored a decision over Gabor Gorbics (26-40-3, 16 KOs). Quigley can fight and is tough, but at 32, he is closer to the back half of his career than his prime. Also, Quigley is a small super middleweight, so the size difference will be distinct, but it won’t matter to Quigley as he will give it his best effort. For Quigley to win, he needs to be smart with how long he stays in the pocket and box Berlanga from the outside. Quigley can do that, but it could spell bad news for him if Berlanga doesn’t feel his power early. Can Quigley put together an upset special on Saturday night?

EDGAR BERLANGA VS. JASON QUIGLEY PREDICTION

Although Berlanga hasn’t been looking sharp in his last few fights, this one is teed up for him and should score the late-round stoppage. Berlanga by seventh-round stoppage.
