Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez picked up the flyweight world title last night, defeating Christian Gonzalez Hernandez in San Antonio, Texas. Bam moved down a weight class to clinch a world title at a second weight with a unanimous decision win.
Promoter Eddie Hearn has made it no secret that he wants to make unification fights at 112lbs, the British promoter in charge of Matchroom recently signed IBF Flyweight champion Sunny Edwards in the hope of making a fight between Rodriguez (18-0, 11 KOs) and Edwards.
However, Rodriguez suffered a bad injury in last night's world title bout. Halting Hearn’s plans of bringing the weight class together.
“I’m over the moon for Jesse Rodriguez, a two division works champion.” Hearn told ID Boxing. “I’m absolutely devastated he broke his jaw in the 6th round. I’m amazed he fought the way he did in the back half of the fight.
“I heard in the 11th round he broke his jaw. When I spoke to him, he couldn’t speak! It’s a really disappointing injury, it really effects the plans for the Sunny Edwards fight in June or July. He’s gone straight to hospital. We hope he is okay. We will have to see if they operate, which they most certainly will. It will probably change our plans for the summer.”
Hearn also looks over WBC belt holder, Julio Cesar Martinez. Intent on making unifications, he continued in the same interview.
“We want Sunny to fight in July.” Stated Hearn. “I don’t want voluntary defenses [for Sunny Edwards] I want the unifications. If Jesse has to wait until September or October, he can fight the winner of Sunny and Martinez. Sonny can fight [Artem] Dalakian, I don’t really care, I really want to make those unifications. That will be the plan still.”
