One of the most intriguing matchups this year takes place on Saturday live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Undisputed lightweight champion Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney (29-0, 15 KOs) will be defending his titles against Vasiliy Lomachenko (17-2, 11 KOs) on ESPN+ PPV. If you are a purist, this has to be the most important lightweight matchup this year.
When this fight was announced, Top Rank’s Chairman Bob Arum expressed the importance of such a matchup to boxing. “Devin Haney is the sport’s brightest young superstar, and he’s taking on a tremendous challenge against one of this generation’s best pound-for-pound fighters in Vasiliy Lomachenko. This is what boxing is all about. Devin and Loma are sensational boxers, and I’m sure it will be a memorable fight."
The undisputed champion Haney is coming into this fight with all the momentum as his 2022 run consisted of back-to-back victories over former unified champion George Kambosos Jr. (20-2, 10 KOs) in his home country of Australia. Haney continues to show fans that his level of pugilism continues to grow with every fight and is up for the ultimate test.
Lomachenko’s 2022 wasn’t as impressive. Although he earned a unanimous decision victory, there was a feeling that Lomachenko didn’t look as effective as he did against Richard Commey (30-5-1, 27 KOs) in December of 2021. One can argue that maybe he wasn’t as up for the Ortiz fight as he will be for Haney, but that past performance cannot be ignored. Either way, this is going to be a can’t miss fight.
