Derrick James is getting a lot of positive attention this award season. James has Errol Spence Jr., Jermell Charlo, and Frank Martin - three very good fighters, and his calm demeanor, similar to Vergil Hunter, has made him a beloved coach. Now one of his own fighters is lobbying for him to work with James.
“[they’d be a] Great team,” Spence said the star fighter to ESNews. “Derrick James—I’m not gonna say he’s gonna take him to another level, but he help him with his defense, help him withhis offense.”

“Talking to him, giving him that comfort,” Spence said. “Especially if you want that defense toget better, you need that comfort and let your hands go and stay focused in a fight. It kind of seems like he breaks down a little bit mentally so working with Derrick, Derrick will get him to the top level.”
