One of the greatest fighters of his era, Oscar De La Hoya, the current head honcho of Golden Boy Promotions, who promoted the previous two fights between Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin, was not all that thrilled with the third meeting between the two fighters, that happened this past Saturday, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
De La Hoya, a Hall of Fame fighter, and former six division world champion, took to his social media platforms to let the world know how he felt.
“The truth is everyone is afraid of speaking the truth,” said the legendary fighter and promoter, Oscar De La Hoya via social media. ‘[T]he fight was a f-----n dud. GGG was old [as] f--- and [Canelo] can’t hold [Bernard] Hopkins’ jockstrap.”
The trilogy between Canelo and Golovkin this weekend was not like the previous two, as it looked more like a formality, as opposed to a dramatic conclusion. The cynic might say it was too rich guys entering the boxing ring to get even richer, as the passion of the first two fights just didn't seem to be there.
Compared to Fury vs. Wilder III, which gave us a conclusion better than the first two fights, one could reasonably say Fury vs. Wilder III could rival the entertainment of a major Hollywood blockbuster. Canelo vs. Golovkin felt like the third movie in a buddy-cop series, fun to see, but a far-cry from what made the first one so great.
In the end, Canelo holds two wins and a draw over Golovkin, which will probably historically have Canelo rated above Golovkin in terms of accolades and achievement.
The unsung story, Golovkin simply didn’t adjust and at 40-years-old, that could simply be just being an older fighter. Regardless, De La Hoya, who had been a part of a few great rivalries in his day, was not all that keen on how the fight played out.
