Claressa Shields vs. Maricela Cornejo: Preview, Prediction & Betting Odds

The latest boxing homecoming takes place in the Motor City of Detroit, MI, as undisputed middleweight champion Claressa Shields (13-0, 2 KOs) takes on the late replacement but number one contender Maricela Cornejo (16-5, 6 KOs). The event will be hosted by DAZN and promoted by Salita Promotions, which looks to pack 15,000 fans at the Little Ceasars Arena.

CLARESSA SHIELDS’ HOMECOMING LOOKS TO RAISE HER PROFILE AMONGST THE CASUAL FANS

Since Shields has been a Pro, things have come easily to her. Not because they were given to her but more so that her talent level was considerably higher than the opponents she faced. Winning two Olympic gold medals as an amateur and becoming a world champion in your pro debut will do that for you. Her best trait works against her as she never allowed fans to build up to her as she was successful from the start. Now that the level of competition has risen in recent years and Shields has been able to face bigger names across the pond, her profile has increased considerably but still isn’t where someone with her accomplishments should be. This homecoming will be when she crosses into the mainstream media, and her name will certainly become more significant.

MARICELA CORNEJO GETS THE TITLE SHOT SHE HAS DESIRED AND SO MUCH MORE

Cornejo is a top-rated fighter within the Southern California region. Years ago, when Cornejo was buzzing, a fight with Shields was discussed all over, and they famously took a faceoff picture at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, CA, which fueled the desire for a fight even more. Unfortunately, the fight didn’t happen back then, but it is here now. Cornejo is a solid fighter, but against Shields, she has to be great. That’s an arduous task, and although Cornejo has long desired a title shot, she will get what she wants, but it’s not one title but four, and the champion is a three-time undisputed champ. Cornejo will try her best to overcome the odds and come out with a victory and the titles. You’ll have to tune into DAZN on Saturday to see if she can do it.

CLARESSA SHIELDS VS. MARICELA CORNEJO PREDICTION

As far as the fight is concerned, I don’t see Shields having any problems with Cornejo. Although Cornejo is a veteran fighter, she has a lot of tendencies that Shields will expose. Cornejo loves that 1-2 combo down the middle, and Shields will use her feints to avoid those punches and land her own combinations. Cornejo is durable, so I don’t see a knockout, but Shields will undoubtedly try to get a stoppage. Shields will be smart all night while fighting her way to a unanimous decision victory.
